Scripture: Genesis 3:1-7
It’s known on used car lots as the “old bait ‘n switch.” The salesman promises you one thing, but after the purchase, you realize what you received was something else entirely different.
Why do we fall for this?
We are enticed by the promise of a better experience of life.
The problem is that this promise never delivers in the way we expected. What is striking in this Scripture is that the serpent doesn’t actually lie to Adam and Eve. If you keep reading in Chapter 3, God acknowledges that humans have become in like God in that they now know good and evil. However, I don’t think that was the part of the sales pitch that enticed Adam and Eve.
My guess is that they stopped listening once they heard they could be like God.
This is what sin does to us. It promises a better experience of life than what we currently possess, but it is the old bait ‘n switch that never truly delivers.
Thanks be to God that we are not left in our sin. God gives a way out in Jesus, that even when we stumble and take the bite of the apple, we are offered forgiveness in Christ and restoration to the relationship God created us for in the first place.
What is the experience of life that sin has enticed you with?
